Race2recovery Readies For 2013 Dakar With Land Rover

Race2Recovery, the team of wounded servicemen aiming to be the first disabled crew to complete the Dakar Rally, has successfully completed their final training session ahead of the race in January 2013. The team’s aim of completing one of the toughest tests of man and machine is to raise money for Tedworth House, a rehabilitation centre for injured service personnel.

The Land Rover and Royal Foundation-sponsored team flew out to Marrakech to take advantage of similar terrain to that which they’ll experience on the Dakar in South America. They’ll travel through Peru, Argentina and Chile across a varied landscape that includes rough boulder fields and sand dunes. The Land Rover-provided training aimed to enhance the crew’s skills in negotiating tricky terrain, dune driving, orienteering, vehicle sympathy and recovery – all vital skills if they’re to successfully complete the Dakar.

The 11 strong team drove eight hours on a south easterly bearing in Land Rover Defenders from Marrakech across the snow-covered Atlas Mountains towards Ouarzazate. From there it was on to Foum Zguid near the Algerian frontier before they headed off-road through rough challenging boulder fields to the edge of the dunes. They camped out overnight, just as Race2Recovery will do during the Dakar, and vehicle checks were performed ahead of the following day.

Off-road expert Mark Cullum who will drive a T4 support truck in the race, led the training session which involved driving across ‘sand seas’ known locally as ‘Ergs’. His extensive personal experience taught the team the way to approach sand dunes, how to identify soft and hard sand and how to recover a car should it become stuck. Lessons including appropriate tyre inflation and deflation according to terrain were also learned.

The training also allowed the injured servicemen to understand how varying temperatures, snow, sand and dust would affect their artificial limbs including hydraulics, knuckles and other moving parts.

Mark Cullum said: “The main focus for this level of training was to get the guys reading advanced terrain changes and negotiating sand seas and razor dunes similar to the terrain they will find in South America.

“Much of the training focus was also on teaching a restrained, sympathetic and alert driving style to protect the vehicle and crew and ensure the appropriate mechanical sympathy to complete the Dakar.”

Captain Tony Harris, a below-the-knee amputee who will be driving one of the four Defender-based Wildcats in the rally said: “The past few days, together with the earlier training session out here in November, has provided us with knowledge, understanding and most importantly increased confidence to competently negotiate the tough varied terrain we face in January.

“With less than a month to go before the start of the race, we are in a good position with a strong crew and I am confident of our chances to be the first disabled team to finish the Dakar.”

The LR2 certainly proved itself on the rainy, cold roads of Montreal!

First Drive: 2013 Land Rover LR2

Unlike most carmakers, Land Rover tends to insist that journalists get its vehicles dirty on press drives. That was certainly the case during the muddy media launch of the revamped 2013 LR2 near Montreal, Quebec. So it was fitting that, when it was time for us to relinquish possession of our LR2, it wore a cape of salty grime accented by flecks of dirt.

Up to the off-road challenges

The trails and obstacles on the expansive Land Rover Experience grounds near Montebello were a swell place to show off the entry-level Land Rover's off-road chops, especially considering the rainy, cold conditions that left trails, two-tracks, and dirt roads soupy, sloppy, and slippery.

Although it's not at all surprising that the LR2 successfully traversed the prescribed course, the things the little ute achieved were nonetheless quite impressive -- climbing steep, muddy hills; crawling over tall, wheel-lifting, body-twisting mounds; swimming through ice-cold water slightly deeper than the floorboards; dropping confidently down roller-coaster-like grades at the brim of a sand/gravel pit (thanks, Hill Descent Control); and blasting down saturated dirt roads.

A breath of boosted air

The 2012 LR2 could do all of the same things, but it wouldn't have looked or sounded quite the same. Now the LR2 shares its engine with the popular and stylish Evoque, which hit U.S. dealers in October 2011, is loosely based on the LR2, and is built at the same Halewood, England, factory. That engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder supplied by Ford, which calls the engine EcoBoost. Land Rover calls it a big improvement over the old six-cylinder. The raspy four-banger produces 240 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque -- 10 more horsepower and 16 more lb-ft than the six-cylinder. EPA fuel economy figures improve by 2 mpg both in the city and on the highway (now 17/24 mpg city/highway). The new four-cylinder also weighs 88 pounds less than the 3.2-liter.

On real roads

Skip Pavlik, Land Rover North America product manager, claims that the weight reduction and additional stiffness in the front end (thanks to a new structural skidplate) improves the car's handling. It's been a while since we last tested an LR2, but we've always been fond of its on-road driving dynamics. Piloting the LR2 on a wide variety of roads in la belle province was a pleasant reminder of the little LR's adeptness.

Continental winter tires helped maintain a solid contact patch on the pavement, which Quebec road crews had heavily dusted with deicing sand and salt, limiting us to pushing the small SUV to only six- or seven-tenths. Not that many LR2 owners will ever drive as hard as we did.

Range Rover scores big with new Evoque crossover

Land Rover has scored big with the new Range Rover Evoque as it has just recorded its highest retail month since its launch last October. Sales for Range Rover Evoque are up 35% with 904 units sold; making November a record month for the popular new crossover from Land Rover. When Land Rover introduced the new Sporty SUV, it got immediate attention for its new concept-looking design. Since its launch, the Evoque has received over 120 international awards and was recently named SUV of the Year by Esquire magazine.

The Evoque offers style and quality

The sporty crossover has been such a huge success for Land Rover that the British automaker had to add workers and an extra shift to keep up with demand in 160 global markets. The new Evoque has received both media and sales success since its launch and continues to capture the attention of buyers around the globe. The Evoque benefits from a long line of British cars that put a special emphasis on style, and quality of materials and is the best in this class.

The compact SUV was also named Bloomberg News’ Crossover Car of the Year, Motor Trend’s 2012 Sport/Utility of the Year, Decisive Magazine’s Urban Truck of the Year, Automobile Magazine’s 2012 All-Star Award and Best Luxury Compact Vehicle from Automotive Lease Guide. And now buyers are also voting by buying record numbers of the popular British crossover. The all-new 2012 Evoque was born out of the LRX concept coupe that arrived in dealerships last fall and became an immediate hit. The new crossover with the raked roofline has been a big hit among mid-size SUV buyers.

A potent and sporty driving crossover

Tata Motors who owns Land Rover, had to hire an additional 1,000 workers to keep up with demand for the all-new sexy Evoque. The luxury brand builds the Evoque and the LR2 at its Halewood plant which will now employ 4,500 workers. That is three times the number of plant employees they had in 2009. The combination of horsepower, torque, and the fact that the Evoque weighs a few hundred pounds less than most competitors, makes the crossover a potent and sporty driving machine that buyers want.

2013 Range Rover Evoque adds a new model

The new Evoque will likely continue to see success as the new 2013 model gets ready to launch. For 2013, Land Rover has added a new 2013 Evoque model called “Pure”, which is a five-door variant. The new "Pure" makes the Range Rover Evoque more affordable with its new pricing of $41,995 for the base model. The new model features an aluminum alloy roof in place of the panoramic laminated glass roof which comes standard on other Range Rover Evoque models. It also features an interior trimmed in leather and Dinamica synthetic suede.

Land Rover has also experienced exceptional sales for the Range Rover Sport that was the volume leader with 1,634 units sold; making November the highest selling month for Range Rover Sport year to date. The new Evoque has been wildly successful and the new 2013 Range Rover Evoque will likely be as popular as the previous model when it launches around the globe.

Startech Goes Retro with Land Rover Series 3.1 Concept at the Essen Motor Show

Startech, a Brabus subsidiary that focuses its tuning attention on Jaguar-Land Rover Group models, released a new concept based on the latest Land Rover Defender at the Essen Motor Show that runs for the public from December 1 to 9.

Named the Defender Series 3.1 Concept, the study is inspired by the classic Land Rover Series III, which was produced from 1971 to 1984.

The German company's designers applied the Series III's iconic styling cues with a modern twist on the Defender through a raft of components starting with the new fascia featuring the classic grille complete with two round 7-inch LED headlights. The smaller upper lamps on either side work as daytime running lights, while the turn signals just below them also feature LED technology.

Startech also fitted the concept with larger power mirrors and stainless-steel running boards with integrated LED entrance lights that are activated with the remote or by pulling on a door handle, while the 4x4 rides on old-school style heavy-duty steel 18-inch wheels shod in 285/60 R 18 off-road tires.

Inside, the tuner abandoned the vintage look and opted for additional luxury amenities such as the soft black leather white decorative seams covering the sport Recaro seats whose back shells are painted white, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and gear shift levers.

On the center stack, there's a new infotainment system with a Sony XAV-601BT 6.1-inch head unit and a pop up screen on the top of the dashboard.

For the rear passengers’ entertainment, Startech fitted the Defender concept with two Sony tablet computers mounted on the seat back shells.

The German tuner said that the study is almost production ready and could see a limited run if there's enough interest from customers.
