2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque To Feature Nine-Speed Automatic Transmission

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque will be one of the first vehicles on the market to feature a nine-speed automatic transmission. An Evoque demonstration vehicle with the new transmission will be on display at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

Land Rover told Edmunds on Tuesday the 2014 Evoque with the new ZF transmission will go on sale in the fall.

But it is still uncertain just how much the new technology will add to the price of the Evoque.

"We don't have 2014 Evoque pricing," wrote Wayne Kung, a Land Rover spokesman, in response to an e-mailed query.

The nine-speed automatic transmission is expected to be one of the most fuel-efficient transmissions on the market. The technology is likely to boost the appeal of the Evoque, which is already the most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever produced. The 2013 Evoque is equipped with a 240-horsepower turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission.

"Increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine gives significant improvement in fuel economy and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions," said Land Rover in a statement. "Smaller ratio steps give improved response during acceleration, improved shift quality, drive and refinement. The higher top gear not only reduces fuel consumption but the lower engine revs improve comfort and reduce noise when cruising at high speed."

The nine-speed automatic transmission features a "skip-shift function" for much quicker downshifting under rapid deceleration or from greater drive input demands, the automaker said. The new transmission is similar in size to the six-speed transmission and is slightly lighter.

The EPA says the 2013 Evoque returns 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. Land Rover did not offer fuel economy estimates on the 2014 Evoque with the nine-speed automatic transmission.

The wraps come off an Evoque demonstration vehicle in Geneva at a time when gas prices are rising in the U.S. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. at $3.78 versus $3.34 a month ago.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Gets Supercharged V-6

San_jose

For the 2014 model year, Land Rover is eliminating one of the two available V-8 engines on its flagship SUV, the Range Rover, and replacing it with a supercharged V-6. The new 340-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 replaces the 375-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 this year.

The new V-6, which Land Rover says has a zero-to-60 time of 7.1 seconds and top speed of 130 mph, will be offered alongside the 510-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8, which carries over from last year; both engines will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new V-6 loses about 10% and 11% in horsepower and torque, respectively, compared with its predecessor — though Land Rover estimates that fuel economy will go up by as much as 15%.

Continuing its emphasis on improved gas mileage — already boosted by the 2013 model year's 700-pound weight loss thanks to the SUV's new aluminum components — Land Rover claims the 2014 Range Rover gets 16/22 mpg city/highway, a 2-mpg improvement in both measures over the outgoing V-8. A new intelligent engine stop/start system reduces idling, also contributing to fuel efficiency and emissions reductions, Land Rover says.

Despite reduced horsepower and torque, Land Rover says buyers can expect Range Rover's full breadth of capability to carry over from the 2013 version, including extreme off-road tilt angles up to 45 degrees, a nearly 36-inch wading depth and a 7,716-pound towing capacity.

Land Rover has not yet announced pricing for 2014. The 2013 model, Range Rover's fourth generation, increased in price by $3,200, starting at $83,500 for the base model with the top-trim Autobiography model starting at nearly $131,000.

The 2012 Range Rover Honored with 2012 Polk Loyalty Award

San_jose

Land Rover North America is proud to announce today that the 2012 Range Rover has once again been awarded the Polk Automotive Loyalty Award in the Luxury SUV category.

This is the eighth overall Polk Automotive Loyalty Award for the Range Rover, which includes having won in the Prestige SUV category in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2011. This accolade also marks the fifth consecutive win in the SUV category for outstanding owner loyalty.

“With the recent introduction of the next generation Range Rover, it sends a strong message for the 2012 Range Rover to be honored with the Polk Automotive Loyalty Award for the fifth consecutive year," said Andy Goss, President, Jaguar Land Rover North America. "We are pleased that our customers continue to embrace the unique experience of owning a Range Rover as they are our greatest ambassadors."

The Polk Automotive Loyalty Awards are presented to OEMs that demonstrate a manufacturer’s ability to retain owners over repeat buying cycles and are the only fact-based awards in the industry based on owner loyalty.  Loyalty is determined when a household that owns a new vehicle returns to market and purchases or leases another new vehicle of the same model or make.  The 2012 awards are based on an analysis of 5.9 million households that purchased new vehicles during the 2012 model year.

“While there have been many repeat winners over the years, few models have dominated a category the way the Range Rover has in the Luxury SUV segment,” said Brad Smith, Director of Polk’s Loyalty Management Practice.  “Land Rover’s continued success in retaining Range Rover owners is evidence of superior customer handling and a strong product offering,”
