Go behind the scenes of Skyfall to see how Land Rover was an integral part of making a blockbuster!

Skyfall: Behind the scenes with Land Rover

The opening sequence of the new James Bond  movie, Skyfall, sees Bond give chase in a Land Rover Defender 110 through the streets of Istanbul.

The action is fast paced, dangerous and all at close quarters. There are no CGI or projected backdrops behind the car, yet Daniel Craig and Naomie Harris as his partner, Eve, manage to handle the driving perfectly.

If you are wondering how that's possible, it is because they aren't driving - and no, the car isn't on a flat-back lorry either.

Turning to Jaguar Land Rover to help, the Bond production team worked with the car company behind the iconic 4x4 to create the scene and many others in the movie using more than 77 vehicles, on and off screen.

For the Defender 110 scene the Bond production crew used seven Defenders, with many modifications made by the special effects department to achieve the stunts and action required by the script.

Two of those cars were even fitted with a special remote driving pods on the roof so Ben Collins (ex-Top Gear Stig) could drive while still giving the impression Eve was at the wheel.

The pod allowed full control of the car at 8ft above the ground. But it wasn't just a case of sticking a driver on top - something that in itself was pretty dangerous - Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor for Skyfall, told Pocket-lint at a private preview screening of the new Bond movie before its official UK release.

The car underwent several other improvements to make sure it could stand up to the pressures and demands of filming.

The wheels were spread to give better stability, engines were modified for greater power and vehicles converted to automatic.

Other vehicles were fitted with complete interior roll cages to give stunt drivers maximum safety when driving close to the edge.

"The close collaboration between the special effects department and Land Rover was integral to the success of this sequence," explained Oscar-winner Corbould, who has worked on a number of Bond and Christopher Nolan movies such as Inception and the three new Batman films.

Corbould, a master in his field, devised the famous tank chase in Moscow in Goldeneye (his favourite) as well as looking after the precarious ice lake driving sequence in Die Another Day.

"Every time a car went past we could hear the ice beneath us crack," he recalled. "The day after shooting it [the lake] was deemed unsafe."

Why not just do it all in CGI? Corbould isn't having any of it, telling us that the "Bond films let me create an environment I can explore", as well as saying that the Nolan and the Bond team "force the CGI guys to live in the film's reality" rather than the other way around.

But it's not just the Land Rover Defender that gets a look in on the car front, the Jaguar XJ is used exclusively by M, and the Range Rover makes an appearance as well when Bond is in London.

Winston Churchill's custom Land Rover gets the highest bid in an auction of vintage vehicles!

Winston Churchill Land Rover Sold At an Auction for £129,000

A Land Rover that was built for former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was sold at an auction for a whopping 129,000 pounds in UK. The vehicle which was modified for him to be chauffeur-driven around his Chartwell estate in Kent, was expected to get around 60,000 pounds at an auction in Cambridgeshire, but it got sold for £129,000, which is twice its estimate. It was sold with the original logbook registering it to Churchill to a bidder, who wished to reserve his identity. Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, regarded to be the greatest prime minister of UK, was gifted with a custom Land Rover in 1954 when he was 80.
The Series 1 Land Rover was endowed with an extra wide passenger seat, leather grab handle along with a padded centre armrest; it also had the registration UKE 80 in the name of the Rt Hon Sir Winston Spencer Churchill KG. OM. The Land Rover remained with him until his death in 1965, after which it was transferred to Churchill’s son-in-law Christopher Soames, who kept it with him up till 1973. It was then sold off at Soames’ Hamsell Manor Estate during the sale of farm equipments. The Churchill Land Rover was brought by Norman Mills for £160. The true worth of Land Rover was judged by Frank Quay, who brought it for double the price from Norman.
For the next few years, the Churchill Land Rover was in Frank’s daughter’s horse box to various events before Frank decided to leave the Land Rover back in the shed to preserve his investment. Frank’s gamble paid off very well as the Churchill Land Rover fetched him a jaw-dropping price of £129,000, when it was sold at a Cheffins auction this weekend in Kent. Cheffins auctioneers opined that the vehicle, which had 12,932 miles (20,812km) on the clock, was regarded as the most expensive item in its auction of more than 2,000 vintage vehicles.

Get ready for the Defender to make its way to the U.S, maybe even by 2015!

Land Rover Defender Will be Entry-Level Vehicle

The Land Rover Defender is slated for sale here in the U.S., and when it hits dealers it will be the British Brand’s entry-level vehicle.

The Defender could be on sale here by 2015, and it will be based on the DC100 concept that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. When it does go on sale, it will undercut the Range Rover Evoque Pure, which starts at $41,995, making it the cheapest product in the Land Rover lineup.

Parent company Tata says that Land Rover is moving towards more volume sales, and looking to move away from being a niche automaker. But he also added, ”We will not be catering to all customers.”

Gain access to the history of Land Rover, including past and present footage, through their Facebook page

Land Rover Lets People Discover More About Its Past And Present With New Facebook Tab

The Land Rover Facebook page tells the stories behind the Brand in a series of dedicated pages with images and direct links to archive and contemporary video clips, hosted on YouTube. Visitors can learn more about how the Land Rover story began, the continuous development of its engineering and design capabilities, its global achievements and its status today as one of the world's best respected premium car manufacturers.

The sequence begins with Conceived on a Beach and an insight into how Maurice and Spencer Wilks' post-war vision for a simple, rugged, go-anywhere vehicle was realised and how Land Rover's early history developed. The second chapter is dedicated to global expeditions, showing how they have demonstrated the supreme toughness and reliability of Land Rover models. It features footage and reminiscences from the original 1955 Overland Expedition, and from this year's Journey of Discovery, in which the one millionth Discovery recreated the spirit of that first adventure in a marathon fund-raising drive from Birmingham to Beijing - a feat that yielded £1 million for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The focus moves onto the essential qualities that can be found in all Land Rover models, from the earliest vehicles through to today's highly advanced models. Not Driven by Vanity or Fashion provides insights into the design philosophy, extreme environment testing and product development that is involved in bringing a new Land Rover to market, with a special focus on the Range Rover Evoque.

The fundamental strength and driving capabilities of Land Rover vehicles have been appreciated by teams working in the world's most inhospitable regions. A Desire to Serve, shows how vehicles can access areas of natural disaster where others cannot pass. Ice and snow are as much of a challenge as jungles and desert terrain, and a film from this year's Land Rover Experience Nordic Adventure shows just what a Land Rover is capable of in sub-zero conditions.

Above and Beyond brings the Land Rover story right up-to-date with details of the all-new Range Rover and a film which reveals more about the vehicle's development, from Design Director Gerry McGovern and the team which produced it.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover: Up Close

Thanks to a U.S. tour for loyalists, we got our first up-close look this week at the newly redesigned 2013 Land Rover Range Rover introduced overseas. As we previously reported, this is the model's fourth generation, but you might not know it at a glance.

If you thought the new Range Rover would follow the lead of the dramatically styled Range Rover Evoque, a smaller model altogether, you'll be disappointed. It looks a lot like the previous Range Rover, though both the nose and windshield have been swept back to improve aerodynamics. The rear also is more rounded. The once-functional fender vents are now merely hinted at by vertical creases in the front doors. Hidden air intakes have migrated up into the hood itself, which Rover says improves deep-water wading capability by almost 8 inches to 35.4 inches.

We checked out a Range Rover HSE as well as a top Autobiography Edition. Both had black tops with integrated panoramic glass, which kills the floating-roof effect that usually comes with blacked-out pillars, but you can also order body- or contrast-colored roofs to exploit the floating illusion seen on the Range Rover Evoque.

On the inside, the changes are less subtle. The Range Rover was always the pinnacle of the Land Rover line — and of all luxury off-road vehicles, for that matter — but the LR4 and Range Rover Sport have been dolled up so much in the past couple of years that the third-generation Range Rover no longer distinguished itself as much as it needed to.

The 2013 version ups the ante through the quality of its materials and premium little touches here and there. Needless to say, the wood and metal accents are genuine and meticulously executed. The HSE had a majestic piano-black lacquer finish throughout (above), and the Autobiography Edition had more conservative warm wood trim with lush rust-colored leather (below).

The 2013 Range Rover adopts the brand's rotary gear selector knob. As in other models, it stores flush but rises when you start the car. Now the smaller knob for the Terrain Response 2 system also springs into action.

Rover keeps the technology and information overload at bay with a new steering-wheel design that's less overwhelmed by buttons. I'm glad to see the signature seat-mounted armrests return, complete with the knob height adjustment. If you don't like them, they swing up and out of the way.
