With less than one month before the Dakar Rally, Land Rover's team prepares for the course!

Land_rover_san_jose

Race2recovery Readies For 2013 Dakar With Land Rover

Race2Recovery, the team of wounded servicemen aiming to be the first disabled crew to complete the Dakar Rally, has successfully completed their final training session ahead of the race in January 2013. The team’s aim of completing one of the toughest tests of man and machine is to raise money for Tedworth House, a rehabilitation centre for injured service personnel.

The Land Rover and Royal Foundation-sponsored team flew out to Marrakech to take advantage of similar terrain to that which they’ll experience on the Dakar in South America. They’ll travel through Peru, Argentina and Chile across a varied landscape that includes rough boulder fields and sand dunes. The Land Rover-provided training aimed to enhance the crew’s skills in negotiating tricky terrain, dune driving, orienteering, vehicle sympathy and recovery – all vital skills if they’re to successfully complete the Dakar.

The 11 strong team drove eight hours on a south easterly bearing in Land Rover Defenders from Marrakech across the snow-covered Atlas Mountains towards Ouarzazate. From there it was on to Foum Zguid near the Algerian frontier before they headed off-road through rough challenging boulder fields to the edge of the dunes. They camped out overnight, just as Race2Recovery will do during the Dakar, and vehicle checks were performed ahead of the following day.

Off-road expert Mark Cullum who will drive a T4 support truck in the race, led the training session which involved driving across ‘sand seas’ known locally as ‘Ergs’. His extensive personal experience taught the team the way to approach sand dunes, how to identify soft and hard sand and how to recover a car should it become stuck. Lessons including appropriate tyre inflation and deflation according to terrain were also learned.

The training also allowed the injured servicemen to understand how varying temperatures, snow, sand and dust would affect their artificial limbs including hydraulics, knuckles and other moving parts.

Mark Cullum said: “The main focus for this level of training was to get the guys reading advanced terrain changes and negotiating sand seas and razor dunes similar to the terrain they will find in South America.

“Much of the training focus was also on teaching a restrained, sympathetic and alert driving style to protect the vehicle and crew and ensure the appropriate mechanical sympathy to complete the Dakar.”

Captain Tony Harris, a below-the-knee amputee who will be driving one of the four Defender-based Wildcats in the rally said: “The past few days, together with the earlier training session out here in November, has provided us with knowledge, understanding and most importantly increased confidence to competently negotiate the tough varied terrain we face in January.

“With less than a month to go before the start of the race, we are in a good position with a strong crew and I am confident of our chances to be the first disabled team to finish the Dakar.”

The LR2 certainly proved itself on the rainy, cold roads of Montreal!

Land_rover_san_jose

First Drive: 2013 Land Rover LR2

Unlike most carmakers, Land Rover tends to insist that journalists get its vehicles dirty on press drives. That was certainly the case during the muddy media launch of the revamped 2013 LR2 near Montreal, Quebec. So it was fitting that, when it was time for us to relinquish possession of our LR2, it wore a cape of salty grime accented by flecks of dirt.

Up to the off-road challenges

The trails and obstacles on the expansive Land Rover Experience grounds near Montebello were a swell place to show off the entry-level Land Rover's off-road chops, especially considering the rainy, cold conditions that left trails, two-tracks, and dirt roads soupy, sloppy, and slippery.

Although it's not at all surprising that the LR2 successfully traversed the prescribed course, the things the little ute achieved were nonetheless quite impressive -- climbing steep, muddy hills; crawling over tall, wheel-lifting, body-twisting mounds; swimming through ice-cold water slightly deeper than the floorboards; dropping confidently down roller-coaster-like grades at the brim of a sand/gravel pit (thanks, Hill Descent Control); and blasting down saturated dirt roads.

A breath of boosted air

The 2012 LR2 could do all of the same things, but it wouldn't have looked or sounded quite the same. Now the LR2 shares its engine with the popular and stylish Evoque, which hit U.S. dealers in October 2011, is loosely based on the LR2, and is built at the same Halewood, England, factory. That engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder supplied by Ford, which calls the engine EcoBoost. Land Rover calls it a big improvement over the old six-cylinder. The raspy four-banger produces 240 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque -- 10 more horsepower and 16 more lb-ft than the six-cylinder. EPA fuel economy figures improve by 2 mpg both in the city and on the highway (now 17/24 mpg city/highway). The new four-cylinder also weighs 88 pounds less than the 3.2-liter.

On real roads

Skip Pavlik, Land Rover North America product manager, claims that the weight reduction and additional stiffness in the front end (thanks to a new structural skidplate) improves the car's handling. It's been a while since we last tested an LR2, but we've always been fond of its on-road driving dynamics. Piloting the LR2 on a wide variety of roads in la belle province was a pleasant reminder of the little LR's adeptness.

Continental winter tires helped maintain a solid contact patch on the pavement, which Quebec road crews had heavily dusted with deicing sand and salt, limiting us to pushing the small SUV to only six- or seven-tenths. Not that many LR2 owners will ever drive as hard as we did.

The stylish and sporty Evoque is credited with helping Land Rover record high numbers!

Wed_land_rover_san_jose

Range Rover scores big with new Evoque crossover

Land Rover has scored big with the new Range Rover Evoque as it has just recorded its highest retail month since its launch last October. Sales for Range Rover Evoque are up 35% with 904 units sold; making November a record month for the popular new crossover from Land Rover. When Land Rover introduced the new Sporty SUV, it got immediate attention for its new concept-looking design. Since its launch, the Evoque has received over 120 international awards and was recently named SUV of the Year by Esquire magazine.

The Evoque offers style and quality

The sporty crossover has been such a huge success for Land Rover that the British automaker had to add workers and an extra shift to keep up with demand in 160 global markets. The new Evoque has received both media and sales success since its launch and continues to capture the attention of buyers around the globe. The Evoque benefits from a long line of British cars that put a special emphasis on style, and quality of materials and is the best in this class.

The compact SUV was also named Bloomberg News’ Crossover Car of the Year, Motor Trend’s 2012 Sport/Utility of the Year, Decisive Magazine’s Urban Truck of the Year, Automobile Magazine’s 2012 All-Star Award and Best Luxury Compact Vehicle from Automotive Lease Guide. And now buyers are also voting by buying record numbers of the popular British crossover. The all-new 2012 Evoque was born out of the LRX concept coupe that arrived in dealerships last fall and became an immediate hit. The new crossover with the raked roofline has been a big hit among mid-size SUV buyers.

A potent and sporty driving crossover

Tata Motors who owns Land Rover, had to hire an additional 1,000 workers to keep up with demand for the all-new sexy Evoque. The luxury brand builds the Evoque and the LR2 at its Halewood plant which will now employ 4,500 workers. That is three times the number of plant employees they had in 2009. The combination of horsepower, torque, and the fact that the Evoque weighs a few hundred pounds less than most competitors, makes the crossover a potent and sporty driving machine that buyers want.

2013 Range Rover Evoque adds a new model

The new Evoque will likely continue to see success as the new 2013 model gets ready to launch. For 2013, Land Rover has added a new 2013 Evoque model called “Pure”, which is a five-door variant. The new "Pure" makes the Range Rover Evoque more affordable with its new pricing of $41,995 for the base model. The new model features an aluminum alloy roof in place of the panoramic laminated glass roof which comes standard on other Range Rover Evoque models. It also features an interior trimmed in leather and Dinamica synthetic suede.

Land Rover has also experienced exceptional sales for the Range Rover Sport that was the volume leader with 1,634 units sold; making November the highest selling month for Range Rover Sport year to date. The new Evoque has been wildly successful and the new 2013 Range Rover Evoque will likely be as popular as the previous model when it launches around the globe.

This Defender Concept combines a vintage exterior with an amenity filled interior!

Startech Goes Retro with Land Rover Series 3.1 Concept at the Essen Motor Show

Startech, a Brabus subsidiary that focuses its tuning attention on Jaguar-Land Rover Group models, released a new concept based on the latest Land Rover Defender at the Essen Motor Show that runs for the public from December 1 to 9.

Named the Defender Series 3.1 Concept, the study is inspired by the classic Land Rover Series III, which was produced from 1971 to 1984.

The German company's designers applied the Series III's iconic styling cues with a modern twist on the Defender through a raft of components starting with the new fascia featuring the classic grille complete with two round 7-inch LED headlights. The smaller upper lamps on either side work as daytime running lights, while the turn signals just below them also feature LED technology.

Startech also fitted the concept with larger power mirrors and stainless-steel running boards with integrated LED entrance lights that are activated with the remote or by pulling on a door handle, while the 4x4 rides on old-school style heavy-duty steel 18-inch wheels shod in 285/60 R 18 off-road tires.

Inside, the tuner abandoned the vintage look and opted for additional luxury amenities such as the soft black leather white decorative seams covering the sport Recaro seats whose back shells are painted white, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and gear shift levers.

On the center stack, there's a new infotainment system with a Sony XAV-601BT 6.1-inch head unit and a pop up screen on the top of the dashboard.

For the rear passengers’ entertainment, Startech fitted the Defender concept with two Sony tablet computers mounted on the seat back shells.

The German tuner said that the study is almost production ready and could see a limited run if there's enough interest from customers.

The new Range Rover has been turning heads at the LA Auto Show!

San_jose

2013 Range Rover has all-aluminum body: unveiled at LA Auto Show

The major auto shows are always anticipated since there will be numerous 'unveiling s' and introductions of new, redesigned, and concept vehicles. Land Rover chose the Los Angeles Auto Show to introduce their new Range Rover to North America.

The 2013 Range Rover is the 4th generation of this popular vehicle and was introduced in Europe shortly before the Los Angeles introduction. It is said to be the world's first SUV with an all-aluminum body frame. During a press briefing before the show opened to the public, it was mentioned that this new 2013 Range Rover is about 700 pounds lighter than last year's model.

The all-aluminum Range Rover will use the naturally-aspirated 5 liter V8 engine, but is noticeably different than the previous models. A few things have stayed the same such as the blacked out roof pillars and floating roof look. The roof line has a very distinct taper to it. The raked windshield appears to make a line down towards the center of the front wheels. Overall, it has somewhat more aggressive styling than before. The rear of the vehicle offers an up-swept angle towards the tailgate.

The 2013 Range Rover offers a longer wheelbase and the rear doors have been lengthened. There has been a lot of emphasis on large SUV's offering three rows and 7 passenger seating. It was emphasized that although other luxury SUV's may be moving in that direction, Land Rover will probably not be adding a third row seat.

The centerpiece of the Land Rover exhibit at the LA Auto Show as the new Range Rover, stationed in a gravel bed covered in water, and glistening from all the bright lights shining down on the all-aluminum body.

The 2013 Range Rover will go on sale in December 2012 with pricing beginning at $83,500.

Range Rover continues its commitment to safety and earns another 5-star rating!

Wed_san_jose

Euro NCAP: 2013 Range Rover gets 5-star rating

The 2013 Range Rover has been recently awarded with a 5-star safety rating for safety performance by Euro NCAP, as the British based automaker has recently announced in a press release. Euro NCAP says that the 2013 Range Rover has received 15.2p in the front impact test, 8.0p in the side impact and 7.3p in the side pole impact. 2.1 points have been received in the rear impact and the model scored 12.0p in the 18-month old child protection and 11.1 points in the 3-year old child protection. These points total a 91 percent (33p) overall score in adult occupant and 84 percent (41p) in child occupant protection.

“This is the second vehicle launched in as many years with Range Rover Evoque achieving the same result in 2011. Euro NCAP have significantly increased the Pedestrian Protection target in 2012 and Land Rover has risen to the challenge with the all-new Range Rover achieving one of the highest ever scores for Pedestrian within its vehicle category. It’s an incredible achievement and testament to the dedication of our engineering team”, said the Land Rover global brand director, John Edwards.

As a quick reminder, the 2013 Range Rover has been officially presented to the public a couple of months ago, during the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The model is getting a choice of two gasoline engines, a 5.0L V8 with 375 HP and a 5.0L supercharged V8 with 503 HP, along with a V6 diesel generating 255 HP.

The British outfitter, Kahn, added loads of extra luxury to the ruggedness of the new Defender!

San_jose

Kahn's Land Rover Defender Harris Tweed Edition

Harris Tweed is a trademarked cloth that in order to carry the name, must be made from pure virgin wool and hand-woven by the islanders on the Isles of Lewis and Harris, Uist and Barra in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

Being a fabric, don't look for it on the outside of Afzal Kahn's newest creation based on the classic Land Rover Defender, but in the interior of the rugged 4x4 model. There you will find the traditional cloth on parts of the seats, the headliner, sun visors, dashboard, door trims and other select components of the cabin.

The British tuner color matched the stitching and the instrument panel gauges to the Harris Tweed cloth.

For the exterior of the Defender Harris Tweed Edition, Kahn went with a black color theme that includes matte black bumpers and wheel arch extensions, headlamp surrounds and stainless steel front grille with an embossed Kahn feature.

Other additions include LED B6 headlights, clear rear and side light repeaters, fender air vents, chrome exhaust pipe and Kahn's own alloy wheels finished in a dark shade.

This review recounts an impressive journey through sand and mountains with the new Range Rover

Friday_san_jose
2013 Land Rover Range Rover

When you will be reading these lines, I will have come back from under the rainy skies of Morocco. Luckily, I wasn’t there for a vacation; I had been invited to test one of the most capable SUV on the planet, the brand new 2013 Land Rover Range Rover.

It’s in Morocco, in the sand hills, under a torrential rain and on Mount Atlas that the Range Rover got to show off its new talents and at the same time, impress the amateur drivers like me. Because let’s face it, even though I’ve always been a fan of the luxury utilitary, this time it surpassed my expectations…and my courage.

A well-known look

You won’t feel lost when looking at the new Range Rover. Though it has been completely reworked, its silhouette remains  almost identical to the previous generation’s. You have to take a closer look to notice that the line of the roof is more inclined towards the rear, that the ensemble does not quite have the same dimensions. It is easier to notice the changes to the front grille, which has been made more refined and the headlamps that leave more space to the LEDs.

Changes are also radical in the cabin. A few good words about the Meridian multimedia system which transforms the cabin into a concert hall. But it also presents a very surprising ergonomic feature: the central screen allows for the passenger to watch a movie…all the while the driver is following the indications on the GPS. It took my passenger an I a few seconds to understand each other: he was telling me about the movie he was watching and I was desperately trying to understand how it related to the map I was viewing. Finally, moving our heads to the side, we finally understood what was going on.

Of sand, rain and rocks

On the roads of Morocco, like everywhere else, the huge V8 purred at every acceleration. But as we also wished to enjoy the off roading capacities, we got to travel a few kilometers of sans hill and impressive rocks. All of it under 50 mm of rain in less then 3 hours. Thanks to its now automatic All Terrain system, the Range Rover can go anywhere. On the sand hills, we had to struggle with the uncooperative soft sand, but the power of the all-wheel drive system (and my quality as a driver, obviously) got the best of the obstacles.

On the rocks, the Range Rover showed off its bigger clearing: it successfully  crossed what looked like a wall without showing any sing of weakness. And I managed to make it to the top of the mountain without any great difficulty, except for the chills it gave me. The huge SUV made it where I wouldn’t have, by myself. We also had to cross wide ponds left by the rain: not a problem, the Rover can deal with up to 90cm of water.

It looks like when the new Range Rover Sport is released, we can expect for it to be even speedier!

San_jose

Faster Range Rover Sport In The Works: Report

Range Rover’s best selling  models in the U.S. market are its Sport variants, and it’s no secret that a new Range Rover Sport is under development. Like the all-new Range Rover, the Sport will benefit from the extensive use of aluminum in its construction, shaving serious weight from all production versions.

While a new Range Rover Sport is a given, Land Rover’s chief of chassis systems, David Waide, seemed to hint at an even more aggressive version of the Range Rover Sport, using family brand Jaguar as an example.

Car Advice quotes Waide as saying, “It’s one of the areas which the business can expand. You’ve seen this with Jaguar and its XKR-S edition. They’ve done very well with the R-S model … so there’s the ability to do those sorts of things with Land Rover product.”

Expect a high-end Range Rover Sport variant to deliver much the same experience. Assuming a hotter version of the Range Rover Sport really is in the works, it would round out the product line nicely. A rumored sport version of the Evoque would provide a gateway performance SUV, with the hotter Range Rover Sport topping the range.

Speculations that the New Range Rover Sport will debut in 2013

Land Rover is giving the final touch ups to the all new Range Rover Sport which will most likely be making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show or New York Motor Show. The model is based on the same aluminium monocoque as the new Range Rover and is expected to follow it closely in terms of specification.

The new Sport, is expected to weigh the same as its sister model, which directly hints us that the entry level V6 variant would tip the scale at 2160kg, 300kg less than the present entry level model, which would make the Range Rover More Dynamic in Nature! Outside the car , it seems that the car uses the same underbody structure. At the front, the headlights will be more aggressive than on the Range Rover and the bumpers will be blockier. The rear overhang is shorter than that of the new Range Rover and its tailgate glass is raked more steeply.

Under the hood the SUV will be featuring the new generation 255bhp, 442 lb ft turbocharged V6 diesel engine. It is also expected that the Sport Model may get an option of 335 bhp twin-turbo V8 diesel engine. With 516lb ft of torque at just 1750 rpm. Also new to the Sport model would be a V6 diesel-electric hybrid  model, which has a claimed combined 333 bhp, a 0-62mph time of 7.4sec and CO2 emissions of just 169g/km.

Go behind the scenes of Skyfall to see how Land Rover was an integral part of making a blockbuster!

San_jose

Skyfall: Behind the scenes with Land Rover

The opening sequence of the new James Bond  movie, Skyfall, sees Bond give chase in a Land Rover Defender 110 through the streets of Istanbul.

The action is fast paced, dangerous and all at close quarters. There are no CGI or projected backdrops behind the car, yet Daniel Craig and Naomie Harris as his partner, Eve, manage to handle the driving perfectly.

If you are wondering how that's possible, it is because they aren't driving - and no, the car isn't on a flat-back lorry either.

Turning to Jaguar Land Rover to help, the Bond production team worked with the car company behind the iconic 4x4 to create the scene and many others in the movie using more than 77 vehicles, on and off screen.

For the Defender 110 scene the Bond production crew used seven Defenders, with many modifications made by the special effects department to achieve the stunts and action required by the script.

Two of those cars were even fitted with a special remote driving pods on the roof so Ben Collins (ex-Top Gear Stig) could drive while still giving the impression Eve was at the wheel.

The pod allowed full control of the car at 8ft above the ground. But it wasn't just a case of sticking a driver on top - something that in itself was pretty dangerous - Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor for Skyfall, told Pocket-lint at a private preview screening of the new Bond movie before its official UK release.

The car underwent several other improvements to make sure it could stand up to the pressures and demands of filming.

The wheels were spread to give better stability, engines were modified for greater power and vehicles converted to automatic.

Other vehicles were fitted with complete interior roll cages to give stunt drivers maximum safety when driving close to the edge.

"The close collaboration between the special effects department and Land Rover was integral to the success of this sequence," explained Oscar-winner Corbould, who has worked on a number of Bond and Christopher Nolan movies such as Inception and the three new Batman films.

Corbould, a master in his field, devised the famous tank chase in Moscow in Goldeneye (his favourite) as well as looking after the precarious ice lake driving sequence in Die Another Day.

"Every time a car went past we could hear the ice beneath us crack," he recalled. "The day after shooting it [the lake] was deemed unsafe."

Why not just do it all in CGI? Corbould isn't having any of it, telling us that the "Bond films let me create an environment I can explore", as well as saying that the Nolan and the Bond team "force the CGI guys to live in the film's reality" rather than the other way around.

But it's not just the Land Rover Defender that gets a look in on the car front, the Jaguar XJ is used exclusively by M, and the Range Rover makes an appearance as well when Bond is in London.

Winston Churchill's custom Land Rover gets the highest bid in an auction of vintage vehicles!

San_jose

Winston Churchill Land Rover Sold At an Auction for £129,000

A Land Rover that was built for former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was sold at an auction for a whopping 129,000 pounds in UK. The vehicle which was modified for him to be chauffeur-driven around his Chartwell estate in Kent, was expected to get around 60,000 pounds at an auction in Cambridgeshire, but it got sold for £129,000, which is twice its estimate. It was sold with the original logbook registering it to Churchill to a bidder, who wished to reserve his identity. Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, regarded to be the greatest prime minister of UK, was gifted with a custom Land Rover in 1954 when he was 80.
The Series 1 Land Rover was endowed with an extra wide passenger seat, leather grab handle along with a padded centre armrest; it also had the registration UKE 80 in the name of the Rt Hon Sir Winston Spencer Churchill KG. OM. The Land Rover remained with him until his death in 1965, after which it was transferred to Churchill’s son-in-law Christopher Soames, who kept it with him up till 1973. It was then sold off at Soames’ Hamsell Manor Estate during the sale of farm equipments. The Churchill Land Rover was brought by Norman Mills for £160. The true worth of Land Rover was judged by Frank Quay, who brought it for double the price from Norman.
For the next few years, the Churchill Land Rover was in Frank’s daughter’s horse box to various events before Frank decided to leave the Land Rover back in the shed to preserve his investment. Frank’s gamble paid off very well as the Churchill Land Rover fetched him a jaw-dropping price of £129,000, when it was sold at a Cheffins auction this weekend in Kent. Cheffins auctioneers opined that the vehicle, which had 12,932 miles (20,812km) on the clock, was regarded as the most expensive item in its auction of more than 2,000 vintage vehicles.

Get ready for the Defender to make its way to the U.S, maybe even by 2015!

Land Rover Defender Will be Entry-Level Vehicle

The Land Rover Defender is slated for sale here in the U.S., and when it hits dealers it will be the British Brand’s entry-level vehicle.

The Defender could be on sale here by 2015, and it will be based on the DC100 concept that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. When it does go on sale, it will undercut the Range Rover Evoque Pure, which starts at $41,995, making it the cheapest product in the Land Rover lineup.

Parent company Tata says that Land Rover is moving towards more volume sales, and looking to move away from being a niche automaker. But he also added, ”We will not be catering to all customers.”

Land Rover Lets People Discover More About Its Past And Present With New Facebook Tab

The Land Rover Facebook page tells the stories behind the Brand in a series of dedicated pages with images and direct links to archive and contemporary video clips, hosted on YouTube. Visitors can learn more about how the Land Rover story began, the continuous development of its engineering and design capabilities, its global achievements and its status today as one of the world's best respected premium car manufacturers.

The sequence begins with Conceived on a Beach and an insight into how Maurice and Spencer Wilks' post-war vision for a simple, rugged, go-anywhere vehicle was realised and how Land Rover's early history developed. The second chapter is dedicated to global expeditions, showing how they have demonstrated the supreme toughness and reliability of Land Rover models. It features footage and reminiscences from the original 1955 Overland Expedition, and from this year's Journey of Discovery, in which the one millionth Discovery recreated the spirit of that first adventure in a marathon fund-raising drive from Birmingham to Beijing - a feat that yielded £1 million for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The focus moves onto the essential qualities that can be found in all Land Rover models, from the earliest vehicles through to today's highly advanced models. Not Driven by Vanity or Fashion provides insights into the design philosophy, extreme environment testing and product development that is involved in bringing a new Land Rover to market, with a special focus on the Range Rover Evoque.

The fundamental strength and driving capabilities of Land Rover vehicles have been appreciated by teams working in the world's most inhospitable regions. A Desire to Serve, shows how vehicles can access areas of natural disaster where others cannot pass. Ice and snow are as much of a challenge as jungles and desert terrain, and a film from this year's Land Rover Experience Nordic Adventure shows just what a Land Rover is capable of in sub-zero conditions.

Above and Beyond brings the Land Rover story right up-to-date with details of the all-new Range Rover and a film which reveals more about the vehicle's development, from Design Director Gerry McGovern and the team which produced it.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover: Up Close

Thanks to a U.S. tour for loyalists, we got our first up-close look this week at the newly redesigned 2013 Land Rover Range Rover introduced overseas. As we previously reported, this is the model's fourth generation, but you might not know it at a glance.

If you thought the new Range Rover would follow the lead of the dramatically styled Range Rover Evoque, a smaller model altogether, you'll be disappointed. It looks a lot like the previous Range Rover, though both the nose and windshield have been swept back to improve aerodynamics. The rear also is more rounded. The once-functional fender vents are now merely hinted at by vertical creases in the front doors. Hidden air intakes have migrated up into the hood itself, which Rover says improves deep-water wading capability by almost 8 inches to 35.4 inches.

We checked out a Range Rover HSE as well as a top Autobiography Edition. Both had black tops with integrated panoramic glass, which kills the floating-roof effect that usually comes with blacked-out pillars, but you can also order body- or contrast-colored roofs to exploit the floating illusion seen on the Range Rover Evoque.

On the inside, the changes are less subtle. The Range Rover was always the pinnacle of the Land Rover line — and of all luxury off-road vehicles, for that matter — but the LR4 and Range Rover Sport have been dolled up so much in the past couple of years that the third-generation Range Rover no longer distinguished itself as much as it needed to.

The 2013 version ups the ante through the quality of its materials and premium little touches here and there. Needless to say, the wood and metal accents are genuine and meticulously executed. The HSE had a majestic piano-black lacquer finish throughout (above), and the Autobiography Edition had more conservative warm wood trim with lush rust-colored leather (below).

The 2013 Range Rover adopts the brand's rotary gear selector knob. As in other models, it stores flush but rises when you start the car. Now the smaller knob for the Terrain Response 2 system also springs into action.

Rover keeps the technology and information overload at bay with a new steering-wheel design that's less overwhelmed by buttons. I'm glad to see the signature seat-mounted armrests return, complete with the knob height adjustment. If you don't like them, they swing up and out of the way.

Untitled

Land Rover has always been an interesting brand, touting an incredible off-road pedigree and a history dating back to the end of the First World War.

Recently, the overall brand impression has shifted, and in urban centres throughout North America, Land Rovers have become the vehicle of choice for many an upper class socialite. It seems the concept of off-road SUV has simply flown out the window, or so I thought. My mind began to change last winter when a platoon of the pint-sized Range Rover Evoques drove to the top of Whistler. After that impressive display, it was more or less settled. I would track down the Evoque's bigger cousin, the LR4, find a mountain of my own, and see where we ended up.

Unlike the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the LR4 looks all-terrain ready straight off the showroom floor. Sporting a ground clearance of 18.5 centimetres, with the capability of lifting up to 24 cm on request, there was never much concern that we would run into trouble. After a bit of research, we settled on a set of relatively well-travelled logging roads wide enough that there was no risk of body damage. Equipped with no more than on-board GPS and a healthy sense of adventure, we tossed our picnic lunch in the vast rear cargo area and hit the road.

As it did in the week leading up to our adventure, the LR4 proved itself to be capable on the highway. There was no shortage of torque on tap, and once we were cruising, the 6-speed automatic quickly swapped gears until the burly 5.0-litre V8 engine purred along near idle.

As with some of our recent drives in SUVs and trucks, I rapidly grew comfortable with the view from the driver's seat. This is one of few SUVs on the market that isn't trying to drive like a car. The suspension is relatively soft and there is an expected amount of body roll, but the LR4 never really feels unsettled or worrisome, even when cornering at high-way speeds.

Arriving at the logging road entry point and the beginning of our adventure, it was now time to fiddle with Land Rover's Terrain Response system. This relatively simple sys-tem tinkers with everything from Traction Control, to ABS, to differential locks when available to give the best possible traction depending on road surface.

Swapping into mud and gravel mode was quick and easy, and in no time we were trucking along through the bush. I was pleasantly surprised to hear very little rattling of interior panels and bits as we began passing over rough terrain.

After a couple of hours trekking upwards into the wilderness, we reached the end of the road. The peak of our little mountain was with-in sight. By this point we were rather smitten with the big, brutish SUV. It's large, loaded with all the mandatory bells and whistles, and has proven itself remarkably capable of providing a great ride over any terrain.

If you're looking for a big people-mover and have developed a pen-chant for exploring, this might just be the perfect fit.

All-New Range Rover Is Revealed

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

All_new_range_rover

Land Rover has announced the launch of the All-New Range Rover, the world's most refined and capable SUV.

The fourth generation of the iconic Range Rover line, the new model has been revealed to the world via a dramatic event held at The Royal Ballet School in Richmond, London.

The All-New Range Rover is the ultimate luxury SUV, following the innovative spirit of the original design from over 40 years ago.

The world's first SUV with a lightweight all-aluminum body, the new Range Rover takes the capabilities of the marque's flagship to a new level, with even greater luxury and refinement, enhanced performance and handling on all terrains, and significant advances in sustainability.

"Launching the all-new Range Rover represents a major milestone for Land Rover, being the first exciting output from an unprecedented investment in premium vehicle technologies," said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

"The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle - that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability.  However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling."

With order books now officially open and sales scheduled to start in late 2012, the all-new Range Rover will be introduced in 170 markets worldwide.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover's development centres in the UK, the new Range Rover will be produced in a state-of-the-art new low-energy manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK. Over £370million has been invested in the Solihull plant to create the world's largest aluminum body shop.

Clean and contemporary design

The all-new Range Rover has a clean and elegant shape which is derived from a fresh new interpretation of Range Rover design cues.  While instantly recognizable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a significant step forward with a bold evolution of the model's iconic design language.

At just under 5m long, the new Range Rover has a very similar footprint to the outgoing model, but with a smoother and more streamline profile - the most aerodynamic Range Rover ever.

The luxurious interior has a modern and pure character, incorporating distinctive Range Rover design cues, but with a fresh and very contemporary treatment.  The cabin retains the characteristic strong, architectural forms, and these are emphasized by extremely clean and elegant surfaces which are flawlessly executed using the finest leathers and veneers.

With over 118mm more legroom, the rear compartment offers vastly more space and comfort, with the option of the desirable new two-seat Executive Class seating package for the ultimate in rear-seat luxury.

To enable customers to create their perfect bespoke vehicle, the unique luxury ambience of the new Range Rover can be extensively tailored with an indulgent choice of colors, finishes and special details, from the immaculately-trimmed color-themed interiors of the exclusive Autobiography series, to the stylish range of alloy wheels up to 22 inches in diameter.

Most refined, most capable Range Rover ever

The all-new Range Rover has been engineered from the ground up to be the most refined, most capable Range Rover ever.  With the adoption of the latest body and chassis technologies, the vehicle's all-terrain performance has moved on to another level, both in the breadth and accessibility of its off-road capability, and its on-road handling and refinement.

Amongst the industry-leading innovations is a ground-breaking next-generation version of Land Rover's Terrain Response® system, which analyses the current driving conditions and automatically select the most suitable vehicle settings.

An all-new state-of-the-art lightweight suspension architecture delivers class-leading wheel travel, providing exceptional wheel articulation and composure to deal with the toughest conditions.

Outstanding traction and dynamic stability is provided by the proven Range Rover full-time intelligent 4WD system, with a two-speed transfer box, working in parallel with the sophisticated electronic traction control systems.

The new Range Rover's unmatched breadth of capability is also reflected in its tremendously strong structure with enhanced body geometry for all-terrain conditions, wading depth which has improved by 200mm to 900mm, and its position as the best towing vehicle in its class with a 3,500kg trailer capability.

To ensure exceptional durability and reliability, the new Range Rover has been subjected to Land Rover's punishing on- and off-road test and development regime, with a fleet of development vehicles covering countless thousands of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in over 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces.

Refined and effortless driving experience

The All-New model has been engineered to meet the highest luxury car standards for refinement.

With its highly acclaimed line-up of torque-rich engines, the new Range Rover delivers swift and effortless performance.  Customers have a choice of a petrol 510PS LR-V8 Supercharged and two diesel (3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8) engines, all of which are now paired with a smooth and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission.

True to the Range Rover DNA, the new model features the unique Command Driving Position, placing the driver in an elevated, upright seating position - typically over 90mm higher than other premium SUVs - to provide a supreme sense of confidence and control.

Lightweight construction enhances performance and sustainability

The all-new Range Rover features a revolutionary all-aluminum monocoque body structure which is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model.

Continuing Jaguar Land Rover's leadership in aerospace-inspired, high-performance lightweight structures, the all-aluminum body enables the new vehicle to significantly enhance both performance and efficiency.

Combined with weight savings throughout the chassis and driveline, the lightweight structure contributes to a model-for-model weight saving of up to 350kg compared to the outgoing vehicle.

The weight saving helps the 510PS LR-V8 Supercharged model to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.1 seconds, a reduction of 0.8 seconds over the outgoing model.  At the same time, fuel consumption is cut by 9 per cent.

The lighter structure has also made it possible to introduce the sophisticated 3.0-litre TDV6 engine into the model line.  With performance just as strong as the previous 4.4-litre TDV8 Range Rover, the smaller engine takes the total weight saving up to 420kg, and delivers a dramatic 22 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, achieving figures of 37.7mpg (7.5 lit/100km) and 196g/km.

The new Range Rover's environmental credentials will be further enhanced by the introduction of a state-of-the-art high-efficiency diesel hybrid model later in 2013 (target CO2 169g/km).

Premium Range Rover technologies

The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies, from interior luxury features to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies.

The interior is packed with a full suite of premium features to provide both front and rear seat passengers with the same peerless luxury experience.  Their well-being is assured by the latest interior technologies for comfort, convenience and seamless connectivity.  The new and improved features include:

  • Convenience - premium features including keyless entry, soft door close with power latching, power upper and lower tailgates, cooler compartments, and electrically deployable towbar
  • High-end audio from British specialists Meridian - exclusive surround sound music systems with audiophile-quality sound

To enhance dynamic performance, and to ensure that drivers enjoy a relaxed and stress-free experience behind the wheel, the new Range Rover incorporates a comprehensive range of advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies.  Among the new and enhanced features are:

  • Two-channel Dynamic Response active lean control, and Adaptive Dynamics with continuously variable damping

Order books are now officially open with the first months of production expected to fill up immediately. Sales of the outgoing Range Rover remain extremely strong.
